Thought the verge article makes it seem as if the slack team was slack-ing while releasing the feature. Apart from this, they had an API to automate the status and this could have solved the problem be a margin as the tech savvy could use the API to edit their status and the others could use a service like Zapier for the same. So, it’s quite possible that they might have deprioritised this feature for the time being. If I look at their updates in the one-year gap between the feature release, they introduced features like screen sharing, email forwarding and merging the data from Hipchat to Slack after their acquisition, among other (information on all updates found here). It could’ve been the case that they had more important work which took priority. I would say it depends on the data and how many people used the feature. So yes, there was a feature missing which could’ve been a misstep on the part of the team at slack.Ĭompany-Focused: The question I want to focus on in this bit is - was this update really an important one for the Slack? Though I agree that the feature seems important, was this something slack should’ve focused on and launched earlier. ( More about the feature is mentioned here.) Was there a true need for the feature? Yes, apart from personally feeling that there is a need, we can see other players like Zapier who have created a specific workflow to achieve the same. Though it’s a good tool given that your status or meeting-busy-free changes all throughout the day, it's too much to expect someone to change their statuses all day, ultimately making the feature moot. What went wrong? The status message was always up until changed, so it could be that you are available, and the message still showed ‘Lunch’ or ‘Vacationing’ or ‘Busy ping later’. During the day there are certain times (for e.g meetings, lunch, focused work time) where we seem available on Slack but are busy and cannot respond, the status is an easy way to communicate this to the sender and she/he can focus on other tasks rather than wait for your reply. User-Focused: Are statuses a good feature? Absolutely. As a Product Manager, I would like to look at this update from two lenses – user-focused, and company-focused and try and understand whether slack did falter during launch or was this feature just lower down in their update priority list. The interesting bit here is the framing of the title ‘ Slack quietly adds auto-expiring statuses’, indicating in some way that slack made a mistake while launching the status feature and is correcting it. You don’t need to shift to other apps for simple tasks and can accomplish them in the slack UIĪn article by Verge linked here talks about an update that Slack recently pushed out, making its status perishable aka you can set a time duration for it and it will go away.
